Steam Machine is an old time/bluegrass project fronted by award winning fiddler AJ Srubas and Twin Cities old time music & dance instigator Rina Rossi on guitar. A shortlist of stellar musicians perform with the band on banjo and bass. Originally formed in Minneapolis in 2017, Steam Machine brought to the national stage a midwest influenced string band aesthetic that didn’t draw such hard lines between bluegrass and old time music. Two time Appalachian String Band Music Festival (Clifftop) Traditional Band Contest finalists and Folk Alliance Midwest Official Showcase Artists, since 2018 they have been performing at diverse venues from roots music hubs to bluegrass and Americana festivals, and teaching workshops at traditional music epicenters across the country from the Augusta Heritage Center (WV) to Festival of American Fiddle Tunes (WA), collecting ribbons along the way. At home in Minneapolis, they are heavily involved as organizers in many of the local community old time and bluegrass institutions.

The Lansing duo of Micah Ling and Molly McBride join voices on cello, fiddle, banjo, guitar to share their love of traditional music. Old-time fiddle tunes and close harmony singing form the gold-tinged touchstone of this duo of friends and collaborators who have played and sung together for over a decade. Deeplying involved in the Michigan folk music scene as performers, organizers, and educators, they have produced dances, jams, concerts, and festivals around the state. With a wealth of experience on their respective instruments and a deep curiosity around the nuances and complex histories of the repertoire they perform, Micah and Molly make music that feels at once cozy and considered. They bring the grit of a crisp Michigan autumn and the comfort of a blazing hearth to the stage with needlepoints of color, timbre, and tempo.
